When boiling water for pasta, is it better to start with cold water or hot water out of the sink?

water
rbailer asked:

For some reason I remember hearing from my dad when I was younger that you should always start with cold water, but i cant remember why. Now I am in college trying to cook for myself and some kids are starting with hot water, while other kids are starting with cold water.

What can I do for water pipes that make a “chunk, chunk” sound when the water is running?

water
Ysmudge asked:

I have city supplied water, no pump or well.

My water pipes make a “chunk, chunk, chunk” sound in the house when the water is running (shower, dish washer, sink, etc.). I saw a question & answer here about pipe rumbling noise *after* the water is turned off being related to air in the pipes, but my problem is while the water is running – it stops when you turn off the water. Is this a similar problem (air)?

What can I do to make it stop doing that?

What’s the best water to use in a hot beverage maker?

water
weakestlink11 asked:

The tap water is so hard where I live that after a while it leaves heavy scale in my hot beverage maker. I work in a place that I can get distilled/deionized water, but it’s a pain to lug a gallon of it home every other day. I tried several brands of bottled water and I guess I’m so used to the distilled water, that all commercial bottled water has a very unpleasant taste to me. When I make tea, I want to taste the tea, not the water. Any suggestions on a water that doesn’t have ANY taste and won’t cause scale in my beverage maker?

How do you drip water from a plastic bottle a drop at a time?

water
alfootc asked:

I intend to go overseas for about 2 weeks. How will my indoor plants survive while I’m away.

I am using plastic bottles filled with water to drip slowly. The problem is the water does not flow at all with one hole punctured. With another hole punctured at the top of the container the water just seeped off too fast.

Anyone has a suggestion on how to make the water drip slowly like a drop at a time albeit the water is minimal for the plants?

How much water do you drink daily? What type of water do you drink?

water
Miji asked:

I drink a gallon of water each day, and since I no longer have water delivery, I usually go to walmart and purchase their 50 cent gallon bottles of water. Anyway, I’m thinking of just using tap water, but attaching a filter to the faucet. What about all of you?

What is in the water in Manila that causes it to be a little funky?

water
fakebobjones asked:

From my previous question, I have ascertained the water in Manila is soft. What is in the water that shouldn’t be? I am specifically talking about the city line, not deep well.

We have water that (at times) smells like a sewer and leaves water stains very easily. I am trying to get better quality water, however I am not concerned with making it potable. I will cotinue to buy drinking water.

What should water temperature be during no sunlight periods, using a solar/electric water heater?

water
Cookin’ in Hawaii asked:

We have solar water heating, but during off-peak hours, the electric water heater kicks in. ( Two hours in the evening and 1.5 hours in the early morning) The water is 140 degrees. Is this normal? I know the thermostat can be turned down on regular water heaters, but does it need to be this hot because of the solar? Water is scalding hot!

What do water desalinating plants dilute brine with before returning it back to the ocean?

water
Setuch asked:

I read in an article that it takes two gallons of sea water to make one gallon of fresh water. My question is the left over water or brine is twice as salty as regular sea water. Plants say the dilute before returning it back to the ocean. My question is, dilute it with what? If obtaining fresh water is the goal, are they just taking that fresh water back and mixing it with the brine?

Is irrigation water ok to use on a vegetable garden?

water
vegasmel asked:

We have culinary water for our house and secondary (irrigation) water for our sprinkler system in our lawn. We recently installed a spigot next to our garden that feeds off the irrigation water, sprinkler system. We thought it would be cheaper to use the irrigation water on the garden because we water so much, but now I’ve heard that irrigation water can be hazardous to use on vegetable that we will be eating. Is this true?
